General description
The NELL-1 (neural EGFL like 1) gene encodes an extracellular glycoprotein and is mapped to human chromosome 11p15. Nell-1 is a 810 amino acids protein containing thrombospondin-1 module at its N-terminus and includes other motifs : five von Willebrand factor C domains and six epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domains.
This ELISA antibody pair detects human NELL-1. Other species are not determined.

Biochem/physiol Actions
NELL-1 (neural EGFL like 1) is associated with the risk of Rhabdomyosarcomas and the gene is identified to be hypomethylated. The protein encoded influences osteogenic related processes and thus loss of the NELL-1 gene function leads to abnormality in bone and cartilage. NELL-1 is considered as a essential factor in skeletal development as it controls the action of runt-related transcription factor 2. Lack of Nell-1 protein decreases the expression of gene encoding cartilage proteins such as collagens, tenascins, matrilins, and chondroadherin. It serves as an important growth factor in promoting regeneration of articular cartilage. NELL-1 is a tumor suppressor gene and hypermethylation of its promoter region indicates poor prognosis of the disease in esophageal adenocarcinoma.
