SPHK2, along with SPHK1, catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine producing the signalling molecule sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P). S1P signals through G-protein coupled receptors and controls diverse cellular processes. Inhibitors of SPHKs are viewed as potential therapuetics for the treatment of cancer.
