层粘连蛋白是细胞外基质糖蛋白的一个家族，是基底膜的主要非胶原蛋白成分。它们与多种生物学过程有关，包括细胞粘附，分化，迁移，信号传导，神经突向生长和转移。胚胎发生、器官发生、创伤后愈合和癌症中都观察到此层粘连蛋白表达变化。发现层粘连蛋白具有促进神经突再生的能力，从而激发了层粘连蛋白。层粘连蛋白由3条不同的链组成：层粘连蛋白α，β和γ（以前分别为A，B1和B2）。以前认为是β链的γ1链包含类似于β链的结构域，但是，缺少分隔结构域I和II的短α区。通过同源重组使γ1链基因的两个等位基因失活的转基因小鼠的胚胎缺乏基底膜，表明层粘连蛋白γ1链对于层粘连蛋白异源三聚体组装是必需的。
