Application
FINO2 is used as aresearch tool to study pathways of ferroptosis and to probe explore how thesepathways relate to diseases including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s andcardiovascular diseases.
Biochem/physiol Actions
FINO2 is a lipophilic compound , and a novel inducer of ferroptosis. It acts in a different manner than class 1 inducers, which deplete glutathione by inhibiting cystine import via system xc−, or class 2 inihbitors inhibitors, which covalently inhibit glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4). FINO2 has a two-fold mechanism of action. It indirectly inhibits the enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and directly oxidizes iron, leading to widespread lipid peroxidation and eventual cell death. FINO2 is found to be more potent in cancer cells than in non-malignant cells of the same type.
